Task 3 Part 2 - 500 word analysis

Task 3 part 2 - 500 word analysis

When i was analysing this magazine cover I found it easy to notice the codes and conventions that were used to portray the aimed target audience for this magazine and the people they were encouraging to purchase it.
The muscular and flaunting Image of singer and model Trey songz acts as an aspirational aim in order of appearance, the way people aim to look like. Due to this, this is one function exploiting the opinion of the magazine being aimed at men, and selecting the chosen target audience.
The recognisable masthead is known as it stays the same throughout each of their issues; this is what stands out for the brand and the potential buyer looks at to recognise the magazine they are looking for.  The San serif font of all the wording implies a masculine feel, encouraging the male gender to purchase the magazine as they wouldn't have an insecurities that they are buying a feminine magazine.
There are no feminine colours present in this cover, enhancing the male interest. The connotations of red and black are danger, motivation and power. Whereas the white is health and purity. These feelings represent the way men aspire to feel prior to their work out and the false sense of beleif that this magazine could make them feel like that.
Each of the included stories are aimed at male’s passions and interests. For example ‘4 ways to rock a suit’ which would appeal to many differing class of men as a suit is a universial clothing choice.
Although it isn’t as noticeable as the more feminine magazines, this front cover does include a plug for a free iTunes voucher download. The puff of this is small alternating coloured lines of text in well connotated colours that fit in the colour scheme. This makes it seem more masculine yet still draws in potential buyers, with the temptation of free objects.
The small section of his ‘Calvin Klein’ underwear which can be seen offers a hint to the class of male that the directed audience is aimed at. This designer brand attracts its own specific target audience which can be easily transferred to the purchaser of these magazines. It could also be product placement in order to increase sales of this underwear, so Calvin Klein company would have an agreement with this paticulae magazine, Vibe. This is due to the strong aspirations and the belief that this underwear would make you look more like this.
Although, this cover is making strong ideologies that all men aspire to look like this, when it’s more than likely that many men, in fact, do not. This can enable to company though to specify their target audeience again to a more directed group.
The left third of this magazine cover is the busiest, this is due to when the magazine is stacked this is the only section that the potential buyer can see so it needs to sell the whole magazine in a few pull quotes and plugs.

Task 3 Part 1 - Glossary of terms

Task 3: Part 1

For this part i created a glossary of different examples of terminology associated with magazine design. I'll include short definitions for each piece of terminology so that i am aware of what each of them mean so if i ever need to refer back ill be able to understand.

- A recognisable masthead: A recognisable masthead has a running theme and is the same for each of the same magazine which includes the magazine title.
- Plugs & Puffs: A plug draws the audience in for example a competition, the selling point of the magazine.
- Colour scheme: colour schemes are the main colours than run through the magazine, noticeably. The kind of colours can depend on the calendar month, for example july and august using yellow and pink summery colours. Also the colour can depend on gender as genders can be attracted more to particular colours.
- Pull quote: pull quotes are important and drawing sections from the main or a big story that are placed on the front cover.
- Main cover line: The main cover line is not the masthead but a large line of text introducing a big part of this issue.
- Date line: The date line is the official name for where the date is placed.
- Left third: The left third is left section on the magazine front cover, usually the busiest as its what you can see when the magazines are stacked.
- Serif font: A serif font is a style of font for attraction rather than information.
- Genre: The genre of a magazine is the type of magazine, and what its about for example music.
- Audience: The audience is who the magazine is written for and who all the features are aimed at.
-Ideologies:  A powerful idea.
-Price: Letting the buyer know how much the magazine costs.
-Barcode: A scanning device for the shop assistant.
-Issue number: To seperate each of the issues from each other so we know which one comes in which order.

Task 2 - Getting to know Blogger

Before beginning this task i completed my targets from last week. I looked onto Youtube in order to solve any concerns i primarily had. I do now feel more confident in the three problematic areas around bluetooth, burning a disk and using new softwares. (Photoshop and InDesign)

Things you can do with Blogger
Blogger enables you to do many things, i am going to regurgitate a list to state each of its important functions:

- Upload posts to explain your opinion
- Have your opinion shared by commenting on others posts
- Upload different photos and videos
- Add labels to a post
- Edit posts after creating them
- Embed power points

How Blogger will help me with my coursework
I've come to the realisation that Blogger will be a great help with my coursework for many different reasons in order to advance my grade and excel my knowledge. Here as some of the ways i feel are important that will be able to help:

- Blogger will enable me to 'blog' what i have done each week. This is helpful because i will be able to remember what i have done previously and how i can move on from this in the following weeks. It will also allow me to write down any opinions i have.
- Blogger can be a place for me to set my targets so that i can increase my expertise by setting a task for next time.
- It will allow me to present my work in different and more interesting ways. More creatively.
- I will be able to find this information easily and it will be easily accessible for my teachers to see.

Next time i am going to create a glossary of terminology.

Task 1 - Skills Audit

Skills Audit
When beginning the course I completed a check list (skills audit) in order to see what I already know and vise versa what I don't know.
I have noticed some weaknesses in my list ( the box's I ticked 'no' too, showing I wasn't aware or couldn't do these things). This clearly highlights my areas of potential problem. I made me feel much more confident though seeing that the majority of questions I felt I was able to say 'yes' too. This was much more reassuring and made me want to work hard to resolve my few weakness's so that I was then able to tick yes to all of them. felt more confident when seeing this list as the majority of the questions I was able to do, this made me feel reassured and less worried about my weaknesses.

One question from the skills audit, 'do you currently have a blog?' I am now already able to re-tick this because i was needed to create one in order to complete my coursework. I have now reduced my list of problems. A method i am going to use is watching youtube clips for educating myself in my various weaknesses. These include:

- How to bluetooth files
- How to use photoshop
- How to use InDesign

I am planning to watch varying videos so i get a clear insight into these topics and take notes. This will enable me to properly learn each of the techniques. Following onto this i will practice doing so at home so i am able to confidently use them in class.

Next time i am going to learn how to use blogger so i am familiar with the features.
